LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that allows you to get rid of fat that resist diet and exercise. People who undergo liposuction usually have a stable body weight but would like to remove unwanted deposits of body fat in specific areas of the body. Liposuction is not an overall weight-loss method and it is not a treatment for obesity. The procedure does not remove cellulite, dimples, or stretch marks but it can slim and reshape areas of the body by removing excess fat and improving body contours.

Liposuction is used to remove fat from areas of the body such as the:

• Abdomen
• Waist
• Arms
• Buttocks
• Calves and ankles
• Chest and back
• Hips and thighs
• Chin and neck

The liposuction procedure can be performed alone or along with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a breast reduction or a tummy tuck.

How is liposuction performed?

Depending on where you’re getting the procedure, doctors will either provide a local anesthetic to numb the treated or they will give you a general anesthetic. Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. First, diluted local anesthesia is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. Then the fat is suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula. The procedure will take between 1 – 4 hours, depending on how large the treatment area is.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

In general, you are a good candidate for liposuction if you:

• Have localized areas of fat pockets that are disproportionate to the rest of your body.
• Would like more definition or a sleeker contour in certain areas of your body.
• Have a positive outlook and specific body contouring goals
• Have realistic expectations for the results.
• Are within 30% of your ideal body weight.
• Have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone.
• Don’t smoke.

The closer you are to your goal weight, the better your results will be. If you are obese, we will most likely recommend that you lose some weight before having liposuction.

Recovery & Results

You may expect some swelling and bruising after the procedure. The swelling typically subsides within a few weeks.  You will be given medication to help control the pain and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. After the procedure, the surgeon may place temporary drains to promote fluid drainage. The patient usually needs to wear compression garments for a couple of few weeks following surgery to minimize swelling.

We recommend to wait a few days before returning to work and a few weeks before resuming your normal activities and exercising.

Results are evident immediately after surgery and continuously improve as you heal. However, you won’t realize your final results for several months. Furthermore, liposuction results are generally long lasting as long as you maintain your weight.
